I am a 20 year old bisexual female from the state of Indiana in the United States. I receive newletters from the Human Rights Campaign and was recently informed of a bill introduced to the U.S. Congress that would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy currently enforced among homosexuals in the United States Military. Basically, any known homosexual will be prevented from joining the military or discharged from the military simply because they are gay. This new bill, called the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, would do away with "don't ask, don't tell" and institute complete tolerance of homosexuals in the military.

I wrote to my state representative, voicing my opinion on the bill, and asking him to support it. My request was denied. Apparently, my congressman believes that "homosexual activity is prejudicial to the good order and discipline of the armed services. For that reason, [he] oppose[s] any efforts that would allow known homosexuals to enter into or continue service in the military."

Now, I'm not a naive person, and I did not expect miracles. But I do believe that this world is gradually changing. As homosexual, bisexual, and transgender people are being more open about their sexuality, we are starting to be accepted for who and what we are. Change will not happen in a day... it may not even happen in a decade.

However, we need to let our voices be heard now, so that we can start changing the future one person at a time. For this reason, I'm asking you, whoever you are, wherever you're from, and whatever your sexuality is, to write to the United States Congress in support of this bill. It may not be passed and made into law, but at least we will let the U.S. government know that gay, bi, and transgender people everywhere are willing to stand up for their rights.

If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading, and please show your support for all homosexuals in the military by writing a letter today.

Hey! You guys should listen to "Take a picture" by filter
what do you think?

and, have any of you seen "the girl next door"? I was expecting nto to like it, I thought it'd be another dumb teen movie, but I really enjoyed it, it was so funny (I think the friend who was all about sex was hillarious! and oddly, very very cute!) and had funny sex jokes (and who doesn't love that?) and it had the nice love story (which I know siobahn loves) and it wasn't all about the love story (which also suprised me) actually, a lot of things suprise you in this movie heh. you guys need to watch it! maybe not with your parents, because it still has the porn story lines (and you see boobies) but it's really good. go watch!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead

I'm such a dork that reading that, I can remember a bunch of examples where that was true. I mean sure, in most situations the reason the change actually ended up happening, the reasoning behind it was money but the small groups of people would bring up the idea and make people THINK. (concept moment) and years down the road, people usually end up adapting the new point of view. like, slavery=bad.

So i try to not let how messed up things are get me down, and think about how much better everything could be.

And on that note, what are your guys' thoughts on PETA? I like that They are promoting people not to eat meat. Super for them! And I understand that the tactics they are using is because....it's the easiest way to talk people into becoming vegan. Like, the whole campaigning that meat and milk make you fat. Sure. However, I dislike the fact that.... well 1) that is not fat-positive. What I mean is that, just because you're fat doesn't mean it's a bad thing, and I'm entirely against diets. Diets are a HUGE place for starting eating disorders. And 2) BEING SKINNY IS NOT THE REASON TO STOP EATING MEAT! You stop eating meat because killing is not a way to make a living! And because animals are friends, not food!

It's like the money thing. The reason slavery stopped in Britain really was because it was no longer cost effective, but the humanitarians and quakers were the ones who pushed it, and got the idea going.

So people will stop eating meat to be skinny, but the vegans are pushing it for the right reasons. Hmph, I don't like that THAT is the way it has to be, however, I don't want animals to be tortured.

Hmph. Which is only coming to the conclusion that I don't really know how I feel about backing up PETA. I like their main idea, but the way they go about getting it, upsets me.

Saved! the movie. You should hit "view trailer" at the top, and watch it! I thought that everyone had seen the commercials a while ago, but apparently not so much, and since I was asked twice today about people wanting to see movies, I thought I should share!

Hmm so what are your thoughts on this? "Reject Shame" It's a site done by a group of Christians who say to get naked. Reason? To promote loving your body, in a non erotic way, and to not be ashamed. They think it will help stop things like people talking about sexual abuse. What do you think?

heavensoverated
ok, first (because it's shorter) does anyone know what states ended up being the swing states used for the concerts? With Pearl Jam? (I bet siobahn knows!) heh...anyone wanna say that here? I'd like to know.

AND!!

So I got this article from another girl's journal, and it comes from philly.com (news site in philadelphia) you have to sign up to read it on there, but I thought I'd post the first half of it here. So sad, but such a brave little girl! But anyhow, the site for setting up the lemonade stands was here ===> alexslemonade.com <---

Alex's Lemonade Stand founder is dead
By MARC SCHOGOL and JENNIFER MOROZ
Philadelphia Inquirer
August 2, 2004

PHILADELPHIA - She lived only 8 years, but she did a lifetime of good.

Alexandra Scott, the girl whose nationally acclaimed lemonade stands raised nearly $1 million for pediatric cancer research, died Sunday.

"At about 4 p.m. today Alex passed on peacefully with us holding her hands," her parents, Jay and Liz Scott, said in an e-mail Sunday night. Alex's health had severely deteriorated in the last several days, and her family said it knew the end was near.

Instead of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where Alex had long been a patient for neuroblastoma, an often fatal form of pediatric cancer, her mother said that Alex died at home, sitting on her favorite spot on the couch, surrounded by her favorite blanket and pillow, looking out the window, her mother and father by her side.

She drifted away with her eyes fixed on the trees outside and a stained-glass angel hanging in the window, Liz Scott said.

"She went as peacefully as we could have hoped for. She just slipped away. ... You could see when she was ready. She let off a big sigh, and went off to sleep. She was very calm. For that, we're grateful. You're always fearful it's going to be scary."

Said Jay Scott: "She was a tough girl. She fought very hard for a long time."

Alex's failing health was evident on June 12, when she barely was able to manage an appearance at a lemonade stand at Penn Wynne Elementary School, near her home in Bryn Mawr, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Because of her struggle with her disease and her determination to fight it personally and for others, "Alex's Lemonade Stands" were held that day in all 50 states, as well as Canada and France. The young girl, who began her campaign with a single front-yard lemonade stand and who, before this year, had raised a total of about $200,000, had set a goal of raising $1 million this year.

Liz Scott said her daughter's quality of life had dropped off in the last couple of months, especially since the June 12 lemonade stand.

"Since then, she's been deteriorating at a rapid pace. It really seemed she was determined to get through June 12."

With money raised that day and since, Alex had passed the $700,000 mark, and more lemonade stands were opening almost daily. Also, Volvo of North America had pledged to hold a fund-raising event in the fall and assured Alex that she would reach her $1 million total, her mother said.

"Selling lemonade is fun," Alex said when she was 6 and not yet as wiped out by the disease and her treatments. "Giving money to the hospital is the best."

You might want to check that out :) (personally i thought "don't have a cow" looked cool, but I'd check out a $1 one since there are so many)
